The growth and the success of skateboarding are directly tied to the means with which the sport is documented. Photography broadcast the earliest form of street skating in the ’70s, but it wasn’t until consumer camcorders were introduced in the early ’80s that skateboarding soared globally.

Video eliminated geographic boundaries: A trick completed in in Los Angeles could now be seen, in its fluid entirety, in London. Video also sold style and personality, allowing riders to find fame outside of contest confines. Unquestionably, video served as skate’s largest growth vehicle and the medium retains its supreme status today.

Leading up to the launch of SB Chronicles Vol. 3, two living skate legends, Eric Koston and Lance Mountain, discuss how film has affected their respective careers and skateboarding at large. – NIKE
