Last night, artists, musicians, designers and skateboarders gathered together to celebrate the launch of the Vault by Vans x Takaski Murakami collection at the Hotel du Grand Veneur in Paris. Famed art dealer, Emmanuel Perrotin, curated the space in his own gallery, which showcased new pieces created by Murakami just for the event. Murakami transformed the Vans canvas that was used in his footwear capsule into more than 30 unique pieces of art, painting Vans x Murakami in various ways across the smiling flower and skull canvases to introduce a new application process.
Keeping with the outwardly lighthearted theme of Murakami’s work, two large-scale carnival games dominated the space and were enveloped with Murakami’s whimsical smiling flowers. In true Vans fashion, winners of the games took home a pair of the coveted Vault by Vans Slip-Ons and skateboard decks from the collection. To round out the evening, guests were treated to catering by Top Chef, Pierre Sang Boyer and a special performance by Ghostpoet
The day kicked off with a private press conference where Murakami sat down with Vans VP of Global Footwear Merchandising, Steve Mills and host, Michael Dupouy, author of All Gone, to discuss the process behind his work as well as his partnership with Vans.
“As someone who wears Vans Slip-Ons nearly every day, the brand is as familiar to me as my own skin,” said Murakami. “It was a pleasure to take part in a project where I can be this relaxed and freely creative.”
